Here is a link to a survey we made on the website SurveyMonkey and the results in the form of a PowerPoint:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WQR6RQR
There were thirty people who took part in the survey, 15 females and 15 males. The first question they answered, other than whether they were male or female, was: 'What Sub-Genre of Horror Do You Like?' Looking at peoples answers it is clear that psychological horrors are most popular, followed by ghost/paranormal and zombie films. This is helpful research towards our film because we are doing a zombie type film and therefore this supports our idea. The next question was: 'Favourite Horror Film and Why?' Although a lot of films were mentioned the clear favourites were the Saw films, the Paranormal Activity films and The Shining. This could be said to support what people said their favourite sub-genre's were because the Saw films and The Shining can be considered psychological and Paranormal Activity obviously comes under the ghost/paranormal category.
The third question was: 'Least Favourite Horror Film and What Made it So Bad?'. Strangely the Saw films were also top answer to this question, along with The Grudge. This shows how the more popular a film becomes the more risk it runs of also being hated. The next question was: 'Are You Influenced By Actors, Directors, Franchise or Companies?' To this 21 people said no and nine said yes. When asked why most of the nine people said because they like to see films with their favourite actors in. This makes sense but won't be very influential on our trailer as obviously the actors in our trailer won't be known actors. After this they were asked: 'What Setting Do You Find Most Scary?' to which old buildings got the highest vote followed by hospitals and rural areas. Next were forests, where we have decided to film, and haunted places. This data supports our idea to an extent because forests were still fairly highly voted for.
The next question asked people 'What Makes You Want To See A Horror Film?' The most popular answers seemed to be to do with being scared and made jump, how good the trailer is, how well friends rate the film, its having a good storyline and just generally liking horror. The fact 'how good the trailer is' is one of the answers shows how mush pressure there is on the trailer to be good. This also gives us an idea of what should be in our trailer. The next question, 'What Do You Like In A Horror Trailer?', helped us further with this. I found people voted highly for aspects like: things in a trailer that scare them, being shown enough of the plot to know whats going on, short cuts of action from the film, emotive music and cliff hangers. The final question we asked was: 'What Have You Seen In Other Horror Trailers To Make Them Bad?' Popular answers to this question included; giving away too much of the plot, showing the best bits of the film in the trailer, voice overs, bad acting and effects, just showing random scenes, bad dialogue and cliche scenes. From this we can get a good idea of what not to include in our trailer.
